A small and intricate tapestry woven with unbleached linen, gold rayon and white acrylic wool on cotton. This design explores a re-occuring theme in my work, of how straight lines and geometric forms can become altered through the process of hand-weaving, transforming from rigid shapes into something more organic and soft. In this piece, each triangle is carefully woven one at a time, building up step by step. Vertical slits have been left open in the tapestry, emphasising the structure of warp and weft.
The tapestry is set on a backing of thick mount-board, with a bespoke-cut picture mount in front. The overall piece measures 30cm x 30cm, and the woven area is 17cm x 21.5cm. This piece is shipped unframed, wrapped in cellophane in a secure cardboard envelope.

Christabel Balfour specialised in woven sculpture while studying at the Ruskin School of Art and since graduating has further developed her practise as a weaver; weaving beautiful quality rugs and wall tapestries by hand on her 1976 Harris Rug loom in her London studio.
Christabel is inspired by weaving traditions across the globe and throughout history as well as by the cityscape of London, with its modern architectural lines and the wider countryside of Great Britain. Her work often explores the juxtaposition between the geometry of the city and the natural elements of landscapes.
Christabel can make a handwoven rug to order in any choice of colours; creating a truly unique piece of art for your home.
