Handwoven tapestries and bespoke rugs, woven in south east London and inspired by both the wild landscape and the geometry of the city.
Abergwaun Handwoven Rug
The Abergwaun rug takes its inspiration from the wild hills of Pembrokeshire, in south western Wales. The design is laid out almost like a map, with geometric shapes evoking footsteps, dwellings, or distant hills.
The Abergwaun rug takes its inspiration from the wild hills of Pembrokeshire, in south western Wales. The design is laid out almost like a map, with geometric shapes evoking footsteps, dwellings, or distant hills. Here the design has been woven in cream and turquoise wool on a superthick cotton warp, but this rug is available in the colour combination of your choice.
All the rugs are woven by hand on a 1976 Harris rug loom in the artist’s studio in south east London.
How It Works: order the design of your choice on the website. After you’ve placed your order, you will be contacted directly by Christabel via email asking you what colours, thickness and warp (i.e. fringe) you would like for your rug. You can choose up to three colours per design. Then, depending on how many orders are queued for the loom, your rug will be handwoven over the course of several days.
Rugs measuring up to 1m wide should be completed and shipped within 2-3 weeks. Rugs measuring up to 3m wide will be shipped within 4-6 weeks. You will also receive regular updates (and photos) of your rug on the loom!

Christabel Balfour studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, specialising in woven sculpture. Since graduating she has developed her practice as a tapestry weaver, and now produces handwoven tapestries and rugs from her studio in south east London.
She works either on her 1976 Harris rug loom, or on frame looms which she builds herself. Her work draws from both the wild landscape and the modern city and explores the way the elements- wind, rain and mist- shape them both. She also finds inspiration in the work of master weavers around the world and textile traditions which stretch back centuries.
Her rugs are made to order in the size and colour combinations of the customers choice.
